MotivePower of Idaho constructed over 240 units related to its MPXpress series, many of which enjoy continued service today.
MPXpress encompasses the MP32PH-Q (rebuilt from GP40WH-2 locos), MP36PH-3S, MP36PH-3C, MP40-3C, and MP54AC diesel-electric locomotive types manufactured by MotivePower of Idaho (Wabtec Corporation. The series began operational service in 2003 and continues today (2023) with some 243 total locos having been completed (a bulk of these being the 110 MP36PH-3C models). The locomotives are primarily used in the passenger rail industry and have been taken into service by a select few operators including Metra (Chicago), Caltrain (California), Go Transit (Ontario, Canada), MARC (Maryland Area Rail Commuter), and Virginia Railway Express.

The locomotive seats the driver at front-right in the usual way behind a four-window arrangement. The bow of the locomotive is given a sleek, sloping aerodynamically-refined shape housing seating and cab controls. The engine control system is located directly aft. The prime mover, or engine, sits at the center of the design just ahead of midships. The engine type and output varies based on variant in play. The battery box is positioned under the engine housing and is underslung ahead of the fuel tanks. Cooling fans help to duct excessive heat from the unit towards the rear. Each truck is given a pair of wheels for a total of eight wheels in the B-B (AAR notation) configuration.

The locomotive has a running length of 68 feet with a beam measuring 10.8 feet and a height of 15.5 feet. The unit weighs up to 295,000lb depending on variant.

The MP36PH-3S and MP36PH-3C models are powered by the EMD 16-645F3B engine of 3,600 horsepower while the MP40PH-3C carries the EMD 16-710G3B-T2 engine set of 4,00 horsepower output. The MP32PH-Q features the EMD 16-645E3C of 3,600 horsepower and the MP54AC follows with a paired Cummins QSK60 engine arrangement offering 5,400 total horsepower output.

Of note is the MP54AC being the only model of the group meeting the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Tier 4 emissions standard. GO Transit became the first operator of this mark with one of the 26-strong lot being a converted MP40PH-3C model.

The 11 MP32PH-Q locos for SunRail were built from the ex-MARC GP40WH-2 stock.

Go Transit is the largest customer of the type with 93 locos in inventory. They are followed by the 27 owned by Metra, the 26 examples under from MARC, and the 20 seen with Virginia Railway Express.
