Kawasaki of Japan constructed the M8 EMU for America in Nebraska, some 471 total units being completed.
The M8 is a Japanese Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) built by Kawasaki in Nebraska for American East Coast service. The type began operation in 2011 and continues today (2024), the series selected to succeed an aging line of M2, M4, and M6 EMUs. A total of 471 cars were built by the company with 223 of these being "married" pairs (permanently coupled / joined) and the remainder consisting of 25 "single" cars. The individual car was given an overall length of 85 feet with a width of 10.5 feet and a height of 14.2 feet. Weight reaches 144,850lb.

Primary operators are Metro-North Railroad and Shore Line East (via CT Rail).

There are three distinct car arrangements: A, B, and single. These differ in total number of seats available (111, 101, and 114, respectively).

The unit is electrically-powered through both a third rail (contact shoe, 750V DC) and overhead (Pantograph, 12.5kV AC 60Hz and 25kV AC 60Hz) arrangement. The traction system encompasses a Mitsubishi Electric MAP-204-A25VD191 unit with 8x Mitsubishi MB-5129-A 270 horsepower asynchronous 3-phase traction motors. Braking is via a regenerative / pneumatic system (the braking action is used to regenerate power to the catenary system). All told, the power car has a maximum designed speed of 100 miles-per-hour while operating closer to 80mph-90mph throughout the Shore Line East Service and Metro North service routes.
