The General Electric U33C was used exclusively across Norther American in the freight-hauling role.
The General Electric (GE) U33C was a diesel-electric locomotive unit designed, developed, and produced by GE Transportation Systems to the tune of 375 total units from the period spanning January 1968 to January 1975. The type operated solely in North America in freight duties for its time on the rails. The largest operator became Southern Pacific Railroad which eventually owned and maintained some 212 units (Serial Nos.8585-8796).

The U33C was an offshoot of the earlier U30C which was introduced in 1968 to compete with the Electro-Motive (EMD) SD40. The U30C, itself, was produced in 600 examples and operated by twenty-one customers (including Southern Pacific). The newer design increased output power from its diesel-electric arrangement by 300 to 3,300 horsepower.

The loco took on the typical American design form complete with side walkways, front cab, middle-rear engine installation, and side-mounted fuel tanks. The wheel arrangement was C-C in the AAR notation, two trucks with three axles each (six wheels to a truck).

Operators beyond Southern Pacific Railroad became Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Burlington Northern Railway, Chicago, Milwaukee, St-Paul and Pacific Railroad, Delaware and Hudson Railway, Erie Lackawanna Railway, Great Northern Railway, SJ Groves and Sons Construction, Illinois Central Railroad, Northern Pacific Railway, Penn Central, and Southern Railway.
