Just under 3,000 total units of the GE AC4400CW series diesel-electric locomotive were completed by GE Transportation Systems.
The AC4400CW is a classic American diesel-electric locomotive primarily utilized in the industry role. The series was built by GE Transportation Systems from the period spanning 1993 until 2004 and some 2,834 total units were completed (all for North American industry markets). The units measured 73.1 feet long with a height of 15.5 feet and a weight of 426,000lb. Six traction motors are in play as the unit receives up to 4,400 horsepower output (hence the designation "AC4400CW".

The locomotives have a traditional design with access stairs leading up to the short nose assembly. At the front face of the nose is a hinged access door leading up to the cockpit. Seating for the driver is front-right and vertical windows line the cabin at front and at both sides. Another access door (to the outside of the unit) sits behind the driver. The rear of the loco is another pair of stairs.

The largest quantitative operator of the series became Union Pacific followed by CSX (most procured with upwards of 20,000lb of extra weight for enhanced traction), Canadian Pacific and Southern Pacific. BNSF procured 121 units. In the case of Union Pacific, the units were rebuilt to become C44ACMs while CSX followed with rebuilt locos becoming CM44AC and CM44AH types. BNSF leased forty of its fleet to Metrolink in 2016.
