Exclusive to American freight, the EMD GP20 diesel-electric locomotive was produced in 260 total units during its run.
The EMD GP20 was a 1950s-originated diesel-electric American freight locomotive and a product of the General Motors (GM) Electro-Motive Division (EMD). The production run of this loco spanned from November 1969 until April 1962 to which 260 units were built in all. The unit was exclusive to United States railways and utilized primarily in freight roles for its time on the rails. EMD constructed four units to serve as demonstrators (Serial Nos.5625-5628, these eventually dealt to Southern Pacific as 7234-7237).

The design carried a B-B (AAR) / Bo'Bo' (UIC) wheel configuration (eight wheels across two individual trucks, one forward and the other rear) and had a running length of 56.1 feet with a width of 10.2 feet and a height of 14.5 feet. Weight reached 240,000lb. The onboard diesel stores allowed for up to 2,350 US gallons to be carried in side tanks under the horizontal line of the frame.

The GP20 featured the EMD 16-567D2 2-stroke V16 diesel turbocharged unit as its prime mover. Output power of the engine reached 2,000 horsepower which could propel the locomotive to speeds of 65 miles-per-hour. Starting tractive effort topped at 63,375lb while continuous effort averaged 45,000lb.

The quantitative operator of the system became the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway which owned and operated 75 of these units. Then followed the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad tied with the Great Northern Railroad at 36 units apiece. The Southern Pacific Company managed a stock of 34 of the locos and the Union Pacific Railroad added another 30.

Beyond this were operations with the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, the New York Central Railroad, and the Western Pacific Railroad.
