Capable of hitting speeds of over 120 miles-per-hour, the F125 design marks the first EMD passenger-minded loco introduced in the last 15 years.
The EMD F125 represents Electo-Motive Diesel's first American passenger-centric all-diesel locomotive in fifteen years. The type was built through 40 locomotive examples from the period spanning 2015 to 2021. Metrolink of California is the primary (and sole) operator of the F125 series with forty in inventory spanning serials from 903 to 942.

Outwardly, the unit takes on a sleek shape with modern design lines. It stands at over a story tall to meet platform requirements. The driving cab is situated at the bow in the traditional way with windows ahead and dotting the sides. Entry-exit is through a rectangular door at the side walls accessed by a short ladder assembly. The drive system takes up most of the length of the locomotive and is seated over midships-rear on the frame.

The complete locomotive sits on a B-B /Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, each wheel measuring 40 inches in diameter. Overall length of the unit is 69 feet with a beam of 10 feet and a height of 14.6 feet. Overall weight reaches 285,000lb.

Internally, power is derived from a Caterpillar C175-20 turbocharged V20 / 20-cylinder, 4-stroke cycle series prime mover with an RPM range between 800 and 1,000rpm. This is mated to EMD AC traction motors (A2921-5) supplying 1,000 horsepower each. The transmission system is AC-DC-AC. Onboard fuel stores reach 2,350 US gallons giving the unit good 'legs'.

The locomotive can hit speeds of 125 miles-per-hour in an optimal configuration but generally cruises closer to the 100 mph range. Power output peaks at 4,560 horsepower (alternator) with a starting tractive effort of 71,000lb and a continuous 47,000lb pull. Braking is through a dynamic-regenerative-electropneumatic-blend brake arrangement.

The onboard safety system is I-EMTS Positive Train Control (PTC) automatic train protection system common to American rail.
