Adtranz built 145 of the DB Class 101 series locos for German operator DB Fernverkehr.

The DB Class 101 is an electric-drive locomotive manufactured by Adtranz (formerly ABB Daimler Benz Transportation) of Germany. It serves primarily in the high-speed, inter-city, local and regional passenger role and 145 total units were produced by the company from the period spanning 1996 into 1999. The 91 ton (short) unit is 62.7 feet long and is operated on European railways by DB Fernverkehr of Germany.

The Class 101 was used by the carrier to succeed a line of Class 103 locos, these emerging under various brand labels of Germany from 1970 until 1973. One-hundred forty-five units were produced of this mark.

Power from the electric drive arrangement (utilizing a pantograph) equals 8,583 horsepower allowing the locomotive to reach a maximum speed of 137 miles-per-hour (220kmh). The electric system in play is a 15KV 16.7Hz AC catenary with 4FIA 7067 traction motors. Braking is via an electric braking arrangement. Installed safety systems include Sifa, PZB, and LZB.

The axle configuration is Bo'Bo' by UIC standards and B-B by the AAR standard.
