The CSR HXD1D electric locomotive is a relatively new addition to Chinese railways, the design being introduced in 2012.

The HXD1D is an electric-drive locomotive designed, developed, and manufactured by Chinese industry for passenger service. Development was handled by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Company, Limited and no doubt influenced by the success of European forms based on looks and performance. The series entered service in 2012 and China Railway is the only known operator of this locomotive at present. Total production to date has yielded 511 units.

The loco sports a "Co-Co" wheel arrangement in which two sets of three axles are featured and all are powered in the configuration. It has an overall length of 73.8 feet and weighs 139 short tons.

As an electric-drive train, the unit is driven a 25kV 50Hz AC Catenary electrical system utilizing the proven pantograph approach. A pantograph is seated at the front and end of the unit to access the electrical lines above the locomotive. The arrangement produces 9,700 horsepower allowing the unit can reach speeds of nearly 110 miles-per-hour but it generally driven no faster than 100 mph in service operations. The traction motors at play are 6 x 3-phase AC traction motors with a rating of 1,643 horsepower. Braking is through a pneumatic (train) and electro-pneumatic (loco) system.

The unit has been spotted in hubs such as Shanghai Station, the Guilin Railway Station, and the Zhongwei Railway Station. The only named unit in the series (to date) is HXD1D-1898 which is known as "Zhou Enlai".
