The BR Class 323 EMU was built in the earlyer-mid 1990s and continues to serve both Northern Trains as well as West Midlands Railway today.
The British Rail (BR) Class 323 is a passenger-centric Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) constructed bvy Hunslet Transportation Projects and Holec Ridderkerk UK and selected to succeed the earlier Class 116, 304, 305, 308, 309, 310, and 312 types then in service. Work began in 1992 and completed in 1995 to the tune of 43 total examples. Revenue service, delayed by mounting technical issues, began on February 7th, 1994 and continues today (2024) with assigned fleet numbers 323201 to 323243. The series saw refurbishment take place twice, the first initiative held from 2011 to 2013 followed by the second from 2018 to 2021.

The Class 323 was succeeded (on paper) by the Class 730.

Operators of the design today include just Northern Trains (20 units) and West Midlands Railway (23 units) with depots based in Soho (Birmingham) and Allerton (Liverpool). Former operators are Central Trains, First North Western, London Midland, Northern Rail, and Regional Railways.

The train set features a wheel arrangement of Bo'Bo'+2'2'+Bo'Bo' in the UIC classification system with the standard formation being three cars. Car bodies are constructed from aluminum alloy and feature double-leaf sliding plug doors for entry-exit at 4.3 feet wide as well as "tightlock" couplings for joining cars with one another. The train measures 230.2 feet with cars reaching 74.10 feet in length while width is 9.2 feet and height is 12.4 feet. The driver sits at front-left.

As an EMU, electric propulsion is made possible by the standard 25kV 50Hz AC overhead arrangement via Pantograph assembly used as the current collector resulting in a rated power output of 1,566 horsepower. Traction motors are 8 x Holec DMKT 52/24 series asynchronous three-phase AC units and braking is via Westcode EP disc / regenerative systems. The EMU can reach speeds of 90 miles-per-hour (145kmh).

In their original forms, the train sets could haul some 284 persons in comfort. In the 2018-2021 refurbishment, this was reduced to 277. To better adhere with the changes required of the Persons with Restricted Mobility (PRM) European Directive.
