British rail industry saw 180 total BR Class 158 train sets completed for a variety of operators in-country.
The BR Class 158 is a diesel-powered commuter train built by British Rail Engineering Ltd at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works facility. Stemming from the "Sprinter" series, the type was used to succeed a line of first-generation BR models and was built from the period spanning 1989 to 1992 with a total of 180 completed. Approximately 171 units remain in service (2023) with an example having been scrapped (No.158763) and eight having been converted to CI.159/1 types for South Western Railway out of Salisbury (Nos.158800-158801, 158803-158805, 158807, 158809, and 158811).

Operators of the BR Class 158 have included East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, Norther Trains, SctoRail, South Western Railway, and Transport for Wales Rail. State Railway of Thailand also has six three-car formations constructed for them between 1990-1991.

The train set is powered by either a Cummins or Perkins engine as prime mover Inline--6 4-stroke turbo-diesel engines. Power output ranges from 350 horsepower to 400 horsepower depending on configuration. The prime mover is mated to a Voith T211rz or T211rzz transmissions system. Braking is via a pneumatic disc arrangement. Cars weigh 42.4 tons and have a length of 74 feet with a beam of 8.9 feet and a height of 12.2 feet. Entry-exit is through twin double-leaf plug side doors. Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum and seating arrangement is a conventional single-aisle approach.

Supported safety systems include AWS, TPWS, and ETCS (only on select units).

The BR Rail Class 158 has been in operational service since going live on September 17th, 1990.
