The Alstom TRAXX electric locomotive design is a long-time proven player on the rails across Europe and elsewhere.
The TRAXX name covers a series of electric and diesel-electric locomotives originally developed by Bombardier and now (since 2021) falling under the Alstom brand label. The series includes the "F140", "P140", "P160" models and their sub-variants. The wheel configuration is Bo'Bo' by the UIC standard (B'B' under AAR) and various electric charges are supported via an overhead catenary (Pantograph) assembly for those units running on electrified lines. Loco weight reaches up to 95 short tons with a running unit length of 62 feet while maximum speed is 99 miles-per-hour (160kmh) for passenger-centric service forms.

The F140 AC entry, as the designation suggests, is designed to operate on AC lines (15kV/16.7Hz and 25kV/50Hz AC). Some 200 examples were constructed for DB of Germany between 2001 and 2003 (as the "Class 185"). Switzerland purchased a lot of their own primarily for freight duties. The passenger-minded form became the P160 AC. The P160 AC2 included improvements to the design.

The F140 MS is an AC/DC version delivered from 2004 onwards. The F140 DC was delivered from 2006 onward and sold to Alpha Trains, Renfe Operadora, COMSA Rail Transport, Trenitalia, and Koleje Mazowieckie. A diesel variant was also developed under the P140 DE and P160 DE designations. These appeared in 2006 and are still in active manufacture. Weighing 88 tons, the units are powered by an MTU 16V 4000 R41L engine as prime mover. Maximum speed is between 99 and 124mph depending on configuration and railline usage (freight or passenger, respectively). Power output is 3,000 horsepower. These appeared for active service from 2007 onward and sold to LNVG, CBrail, SNCF, DB Regio, and DB Fernverkehr in relatively limited numbers.

Mid-2011 saw the introduction of an electro-diesel model known as 'The Last Mile' carrying a diesel engine as well as AC electric support.

Supported electric systems are 15kV / 16.7Hz, 25kV / 50Hz AC, and 1.5kV, 3kV DC accessed via an overhead Pantograph assembly.

The loco supports various European safety systems and includes ETCS.
