The 2-6-0 Mogil steam locomotive became a success for its many decades serving global rail lines.
The 2-6-0 "Mogul" was a coal-fed, steam-based locomotive design. On paper, the design succeeded the earlier 2-4-0 types and preceded the subsequent 2-6-2 arrangement. The 2-6-0 was classified as such due to its three large wheels per frame side led by a paired smaller set at the front (positioned on a "swing-axle" swiveling truck / bogie assembly). When compared to its predecessors, the newer 2-6-0 wheel approach offered better track adhesion than before, resulting in increased pulling power for freight duties (though some noted their propensity to derail).

The locomotive took on the usual design shape of the period with the driving cab set over the rear of the operating platform. Ahead was the cylindrical boiler unit (laid horizontally) capped by the funnel at front. Various lighting devices were affixed to the front to illuminate the track ahead. The coal tender sat immediately behind the locomotive unit.

In its earliest forms, the 2-6-0 appeared in the early 1850s ("Pawnee" being the first named example for Philadelphia & Reading Rail Road) in America but the first "true form" example being documented in 1860 for Louisville and Nashville Railroad (these with the articulated swing axles at front). It appeared in England during the 1870s to make a storied name for itself overseas. Before the end, the design was featured across Australia, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, and Africa for its part in railroad history.

Its longevity and global use made it one of the most successful wheel designs of the period and the type saw continued production in the United States even into the 1920s.
